Bespoke fused glass design by Rachel Irwin.
Rachel studied Drawing & Painting at Edinburgh of Art and practises in many different mediums which results in her glass designs being in an individual and painterly style.
Fused glass is an ancient craft involving a great amount of skill, knowledge and patience. The glass is supplied in flat sheets, stringers (thin tubes of glass rather like spaghetti) and fine grains (frit). It is then cut, sprinkled and layered and cooked in a kiln at around 800 degrees where it melts and fuses together. This cycle takes around 18 hours and each piece may be reworked several times. Dichroic glass is often used and is a fairly recent addition to the glass craftsman materials. Originally, it was a thin layer of metal developed by Nasa to protect equipment from radiation. The word 'dichroic' means two-tone as the metal layer transmits more than one colour with a beautiful metallic sheen.
The results of glass fusing are always unique and cannot be replicated. The vibrancy of colour will never fade and the translucent quality of glass is both intriguing and compelling. All these elements guarantee enduring enjoyment of each piece of fused glass jewellery.
